Alan Klein worked with PR 'Consigliere' Alan Metrick of Alan Metrick Communications to pitch the devastating impact New York's real estate tidal wave is having, specifically, on musicians and New York's much vaunted music and cultural scenes. NYC Performing Arts Spaces, the organization behind this story, released a report with specific recommendations on how to keep New York as "cultural capital of the world."

The report addresses a lack of affordable rehearsal space for established and emerging talent. It suggests that New York will face a talent drain as musicians leave New York to revitalize other cities' music scenes.

Working with Alan Metrick Communications, we landed a front-page Metro Section story in the New York Times.

Raise the Rainbow media campaign

Since it first flew over San Francisco’s 1978 Freedom Day Parade, the Rainbow Flag has become an enduring symbol of lesbian and gay unity worldwide.

In commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the Stonewall Rebellion, the world’s largest rainbow flag was unfurled in New York City before one-million-plus celebrants from all over the world.

The historic event, part of a three-day weekend of lesbian and gay pride events, took place on June 26, 1994.

Highly controversial media campaign against homophobe Laura Schlessinger leads to the cancellation of her new show.

On March 1, 2000, five friends got together and launched StopDrLaura.com with the goal of forcing Paramount Television to cancel Dr. Laura Schlessinger's then-upcoming TV show.

Schlessinger had repeatedly called gays and lesbians "biological errors" and deviant — (one of our favorite Dr. Laura quotes: "How many letters have I read on the air from gay men who acknowledge that a huge portion of the male homosexual populace is predatory on young boys?'') — and we were outraged that Paramount would give a national platform to someone intent on spreading that kind of intolerance against a class of Americans.

Of equal concern, two weeks before StopDrLaura.com was launched, the Los Angeles Times reported that a national gay rights group had reached a "tentative accord" with Paramount in which they agreed that Schlessinger's TV show could run. Like many in the community, we were outraged, and decided to do something about it. Thus StopDrLaura.com was born.

Established in 1983, the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center has grown to become the largest LGBT multi-service organization on the East Coast and second largest LGBT community center in the world.

The Center provides groundbreaking social service, public policy, educational and cultural/recreational programs. It also serve as an incubator for grassroots groups that meet here.

The LGBT Center is the birthplace of organizations such as the AIDS activist group ACT UP, Queer Nation and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

GLAAD's media campaign against the Partnership for a Drug-Free America

The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) launched a national media campaign to alert television networks and independent and affiliated stations nationwide of a public service announcement (PSA) it considers patently homophobic.

GLAAD asked the Partnership for a Drug-Free America (PDFA) to recall the ad, which is part of a campaign to end heroin use, but a terse response from PDFA flatly refused to address GLAAD’s concerns.

Campaign to produce and air the first-ever antigay-violence television public service announcements.

The Anti-Violence Campaign

Alan Klein, Jay Blotcher and Ken Woodard created and produced television public service announcements aimed at ending bias-related violence. We provided publicity and public relations and placed feature stories in major outlets including the Los Angeles Times, The New York Times, GQ, The Advocate and CNN.

We recruited Susan Sarandon as Campaign Chair and Campaign National Council members Ricki Lake, Lou Reed, Chaka Khan, Harvey Fierstein, Gus Van Sant and John Waters.
